Clinical audit is based around the use of codes, which you need to incorporate into your routine of data entry, to allow later information retrieval. This information can be sorted and categorised according to your needs. The subtlety of such sorting and categorisation depends on the detail you build into your codes. The more detail in your codes, the more detail available at the time of information retrieval. But this has to be balanced against the ease of the coding process, which is simpler if the codes are few, and easily remembered.
SPM's system aims to be as flexible as possible, allowing you to set up your own "in house" codes to be as simple or complex as you wish.
International systems are vast, complex and inscrutable, whereas each individual or clinical unit is able to function from day to day with a much smaller subset of codes. The in-house codes can therefore be set up to be much friendlier.
You have the option of creating a code set that suits yourself or your group, or using someone else's set if you find their system compatible with your requirements.
Use AuditMove.exe to import, export or delete built-up code sets
Use SPMconfig > Data Import to import ICD10 code sets.
